Our Policies

Our nursery believes that children flourish best when they know how they are expected to behave. Children gain respect through interaction with caring adults who show them respect and value their individual personalities. Positive, caring and polite behaviour will be encouraged and praised at all times in an environment where children learn to respect themselves, other people and their surroundings.

Children need to have set boundaries of behaviour for their own safety and the safety of their peers. Within the nursery we aim to set these boundaries in a way which helps the child to develop a sense of the significance of their own behaviour, both on their own environment and those around them. Restrictions on the child’s natural desire to explore and develop their own ideas and concepts are kept to a minimum.

Parents/carers are encouraged to come with child prior to admission and spend time in all play areas, meeting staff, and other children and their parents.

Parents/carers are encouraged to spend time with child at home, talking about nursery in preparation for them coming.

Parents/carers are asked to stay with the child at nursery for as long as it may be necessary until he/she has completely settled and is not distressed by the separation.

Parents/carers should leave something belonging to the child or themselves if this is helpful.

It is stressed that each child is an individual and the settling in/adjustment Period varies considerably from child to child. The main aim is for parent/carers, child care providers and children to be happy and at ease with the new situation.

Should there be a need for selection due to more applicants than places available, then the following criteria will be implemented.

Our setting will work with children, parents and the community to ensure the safety of children and to give them the very best start in life.

The key commitments of the Heritage Day Nursery policy for safeguarding children

  • We are committed to building a ‘culture of safety’ in which children are protected from abuse and harm in all areas of its service delivery.
  • We are committed to responding promptly and appropriately to all incidents or abuse and harm in that may occur and to work with statutory agencies in accordance with the procedures that are set down in “what to if you are worried a child is being abused (DoH 2004)
  • We are committed to promoting awareness of child abuse issues throughout its training and learning programs for adult. We are also committed to empowering young children, through its early childhood curriculum, promoting their right to be strong, resilient and listened to.

The Nursery recognizes and welcomes all legislation and existing codes of practice produced by the appropriate Commissions for the promotion of equal opportunities for all.

The Nursery aims to ensure that individuals are recruited, selected, trained and promoted on the basis of occupational skill requirements. In this respect, the Nursery will ensure that no job applicant or employee will receive less favorable treatment on the grounds of age, gender, marital status, race, religion, colour, cultural or national origin or sexuality, which cannot be justified as being necessary for the safe and effective performance of the work or training for the work.

This policy is brought to the attention of every employee and applicant and user.

The Nursery aims to have high standards of hygiene and to prevent the spread of infection which is essential to maintain good health.

The staffs have secure knowledge of policies and arrangements for health and hygiene and are committed to adhere to procedures promoting children’s good health. The pre-school has an appointed Health and Safety Officer and all premises; equipment and practices used must be maintained to a standard that complies with Health and Safety, Fire and Food Hygiene legislation. To ensure that all equipment and toys meet with British Standards 5665 and carry the European standard CE mark.

When it becomes known that a vacancy will occur, advertisements are placed in the local papers and with recruitment agencies and at local job centre as well as in libraries, clinics, the church news sheet, the pre-school news letter and on the parents’ notice board.

A brief description of the job is given with details of how to apply.

A closing date for applications to be received is also given.

Each applicant is given the opportunity to come for an informal visit prior to the completion of their application forms.

When applications are received, a sub group of the management committee meets to consider the suitability of the applicants and a short list is drawn up if necessary. Letters requesting references are then sent out.

Attending a new day care group is a significant experience for a child and parent/carer. It is vital that introductions are sensitively handled and at a pace appropriate to the individual child and parent/carer.

Settling in begins with understanding as much as possible about the child and parent/carer. Developing a relationship with them and making them feel welcome.. This is best achieved by early allocation of a key worker and a home visit to talk about admission and settling in followed by a series of introductory visits by the parent/carer and child to the day care setting.

We will ensure that settling in is fully discussed with the child and parent/carer and sensitive to their individual needs. Separation between the child and parent/carer must be child centered, open and planned.

The nursery team will work with parents as partners in providing quality care for their children. All parents will be welcome to visit the Nursery at any time. Parents will have access to their child’s records and will be consulted in respect to the care given. A suggestion system will be put into operation. Parents will be given a copy of all the Policies of the Nursery. Parent groups will be accorded hospitality and all facilities on the Nursery premises.

The nursery understands that play is something that a child best enjoys. A child’s play has a purpose and can be a step towards the learning and understanding of valuable skills. It can help the child fit into the world physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially, and grow to be a healthy and competent individual.

The nursery will endeavour to provide children with a stimulating environment, where playing and learning go hand in hand. A varied selection of activities will be provided throughout the day, using both indoor and outdoor activities.

Consideration will be taken to ensure that provision is made for children with special needs and abilities.

Heritage Day Nursery management ensures all staff involved in the preparation and handling of food are competent and qualified to do so. The setting is also registered with the local authority’s Environmental Health Department.

The children will be given a balanced diet with healthy snacks.

The menu is displayed each week for parents to see. Recipes will be available to parents on request.

The menu will provide the children with a tasty, varied meal. Children who do not have breakfast at home will be offered this when they arrive before 9.ooam.

Milk will be served with morning and afternoon snacks with water available at all times, including lunch time.

Children who are able will serve their own lunch with staff encouraging small helpings.

Children will be allowed second helpings and will still receive a desert if they refuse their main meal.

When dealing with medication of any kind in the nursery, strict guidelines will be followed.

  • Prescription medicine will only be given to the person named on the bottle for the dosage stated
  • Medicines must be in their original containers
  • Those with parental responsibility of any child requiring prescription medication should allow a senior member of staff to have sight of the bottle. The staff member should note the details of the administration on the appropriate form and another member of staff should check these details

We ensure that any photographs or recordings taken of your children in our nursery are only done with prior written permission from each child’s parent. This is gained when each child is registered and is updated on a regular basis to ensure that this permission still stands.

We ask for individual permissions for photographs and video recordings for each different use including, use in the child’s learning journey, for display purposes, for promotion materials including our nursery website and brochure and to use in the local press. We ensure that parents understand that their child may also be on another photograph, but not as the primary person, that may be used in another child’s learning journey.

If a parent is not happy about one or more of these uses then the nursery will respect their wishes and find alternative ways of recording their child’s play or learning.

Staff are not permitted to take photographs or recordings of a child on their own cameras, mobiles or other devices and only use those provided by the nursery. The nursery manager will monitor all photographs and recordings to ensure that the parent’s wishes are adhered to.

Parents are not permitted to use any recording device or camera (including those on mobile phones) on the nursery premises without the prior consent of the manager.
